A Comparison of Hello Fresh and Home Chef: Which is Better?
Meal delivery has been a TRUE GIFT during quarantine. It keeps us mostly out of grocery stores and has been, quite honestly, as if delivered straight from the palms of angels to our fam. 💕💕 Dramatic, I know, but it really is insanely helpful for this already overwhelmed mama.
I get super excited to restock my fridge every time a box shows up on our doorstep. Which has been more often than usual, lately.
Hello Fresh, likely because of increased demand during quarantine, stopped offering a 5x/week option. And 3 meals/week wasn’t cutting it, so I decided to supplement with Home Chef. The addition of Home Chef (also 3 times/week), has provided a really nice context for direct comparison of the two, so I thought I’d share those results with you all today in case you were considering them!
PS- None of this is sponsored – I just thought it might be helpful info for those of you wondering what it’s really like!
So What’s the Difference Between the Two?
Before we get in to the details, I must say that BOTH are fantastic options. There have been no deal-breaker issues with either, and I truly believe both are fantastic.
Price:
Hello Fresh has the better price point at a final total of $96 versus Home Chef’s $119 after the sign up discounts are used. Both offer pretty nice sign up discounts (though they have made some changes in those discounts recently).
Meal Selection:
Home Chef seems to have slightly more variety and with potentially slightly better ingredients. Both companies offer vegetarian options, as well as personalized menus (i.e. low calorie, pork-free, family-friendly, etc).
Packaging:
Comparable. Home Chef has bags of 2 servings each, so we receive two bags for each meal because we’re on a 4-person plan.
Level of Difficulty:
Comparable! No noticeable change in difficulty between Hello Fresh and Home Chef. And trust me, if I can do it, A-NY-ONE can.
Portion size:
Comparable. Overall, however, I felt like Hello Fresh provides a more “complete” meal, whereas sometimes I needed to add additional sides to Home Chef.
Other considerations:
-Home Chef’s font size is super tiny, in my opinion (but it could also be my recent Lasik talking)
-Home Chef’s instructions are not clear on how to adapt the meal when preparing food for 4 people instead of 2.
-Hello Fresh once made an error when packing (missed two ingredients on one occasion), and compensated us generously for the error.
-Both have a user-friendly app to help easily manage meal selection and delivery.
My Honest Bottom line:
These two options are both such a great choices that it’s nearly a toss up. and truly, I’m not just being kind. They’re both fantastic.
For those with a more refined palate, it’s probably worth the extra cash for Home Chef. For my family, as the basic food lovers we are, Hello Fresh is at a great price point with enough to offer, so it’s my personal pick here today.

And before we go, I would just like to take a moment to thank meal delivery services, in general, for actually helping me ENJOY cooking. (YES, you heard that right). That’s new. And my family is quite happy about it, as am I.
