A Basement Makeover You Won’t Want to Miss!

Holy smokes. It is so difficult to find the time to update the house while juggling three tiny people and a husband’s insane work schedule! BUT. We’ve made some changes, people! And I AM SO EXCITED to share them with you!

We’ve lived in our house for a couple of years, but didn’t touch the basement for a loooong time. It was a sad little basement, really. But honestly, it didn’t need to be urgently redone because the rest of the house worked just fine for us. PLUS, I was pregnant, then we had a tiny baby, and it just wasn’t practical for our fam for a while.

BUT THEN WE GOT IT TOGETHER. (ish).

So without further ado, I bring you…the basement.

I'm thrilled to share our progress with our basement update! It went from a non-functional space for us to a perfect space for hosting! Take a look to get inspired for your own updates! home decor, interior design, basement decor, modern industrial home design
Head downstairs with me!

Before

Okay, this isn’t a “true” before because I forgot to take a pic until we moved the furniture out. But what we had down there was not selected for the modern industrial vibe of the house, so just imagine some wicker, a little purple couch, and an oversized tv stand with an undersized tv. It was just pitiful. But here’s the space!

When we went to start the update, the first thing I did was see if we could have a new curtain rod made to match the awesome custom metal work of our upstairs curtain rod. And sure enough, I was able to track down the fellow who helped do the custom work at building, and he created this beauty for us. I was shocked that it was less than $150, and very happy about that! I don’t love hanging out in a place without window coverings!

So we went with Pottery Barn for our curtains and after three purchases we didn’t love, we settled on these colorblock curtains with a blackout liner and they are perfect. The color blocking adds a little detail, without being an overwhelming pattern or a color that clashes with the neutrals in the room. (Also, I know I need to have them hemmed!)

Then we had a mission to find a sofa bed, so that if our guests needed more than just the one basement bedroom, that they would be able to sleep comfortably in the living room as well. WELL. I don’t know what your experiences with sofa beds are, but they are almost all horrendously uncomfortable while also having a shocking price tag, in most cases. After like 10 stores, we ended up at Moe’s Home Collection and fell in love with this couch that just swallows you up whole. We opted to get two of the ottomans so that the could be pushed together to make a decent sized bed! And it actually works! I styled it with a few throw pillows from Amazon. The wall art is from Moe’s Home Collection. The table in the middle of the couch and the large lamp (it’s from Ikea!) were purchases from the home’s previous owner.

Accron Throw Pillow Covers 18×18 / Amazon $8.99
MIULEE Pack of 2 Cushion Cover 20×20 / Amazon $22.99

We don’t have any office space in our house, so we wanted to be sure we created some desk space where we could get away to do a little work. So we added this table! It’s the perfect height in order to work from the barstools! The barstools were purchased from our home’s previous owner and I’m not sure where they are from, but man are they cool! The propeller art is from Moe’s Home Collection. (Can you tell we love that place?)

We got this large multi-drawer chest from a store which is a hidden gem south of Seattle called Sansaco Home Furnishings. We plan to use it as a crafting cabinet! The decor pieces on top are from Pier 1. The art is from Moe’s Home Collection.

The bar is one of our favorite features! It was created using the same treated tin that makes up the accent wall in our living area upstairs. It has a custom top, which we love! The beautiful star was another purchase from the home’s previous owner (who clearly had a knack for interior design!) We got the wine rack, Moscow Mule mugs, and the tray (it’s actually a dice tray) on Amazon. We purchased a kegerator a while back on Amazon and moved it to behind the bar recently (it’s still rocking Elysian Night Owl!) We will be adding an awesome pipe/wood multi-tier shelf behind the bar but it’s sadly still in the box! I’ll update you with deets on that soon! We will also be adding some wall art. But I think it still looks pretty great for now!

Side note: did you notice the polished concrete floors?! LOVE. ❤️

This is a place. to. party. One of the reasons we loved our house when we went to purchase was because of THIS space. It is perfect for our guests to hang out. There is a full bath and a bedroom in the area, so our guests have almost everything they need right downstairs. And they’re two floors away from our little monsters at night, ensuring they won’t be awoken when we are!

So when are you coming over?!

We are thrilled with how it’s turning out! For more on our home, you can check out my post on our nursery: Favorite Places: Nursery Edition!
