Outfit Ideas for Your Holiday Card Photo Shoot!
Here I sit, festive Starbucks cup in hand (actually, cup right next to me, because #typing), and I am THRILLED to bring you a first Christmas post of the year.
THRILLED.
Do you send out holiday cards? Tim and I made a decision to start sending them once we had our first babe, and we’ve kept up the festive tradition ever since…but it hasn’t been easy.
In fact, in recent years, I have been embarrassingly late at scheduling photos for our cards.
This year, I was on top of it. BUT. Photos were scheduled, outfits were not.
And once again, I found myself trying to pick some last-minute coordinating outfits, wishing I had a file cabinet full of outfit inspiration.
So this year, I decided to create just that: a bit of holiday outfit inspiration, in a little mini-version, right here for you. 😍
Old Navy (not sponsored, BTW) has so many inexpensive, coordinating finds, that I LOVE buying our holiday outfits there. This keeps the colors somewhat consistent with matching shades, and also simplifies the process in a huge way: no more traveling between stores or checking (and rechecking, and rechecking again) delivery days to make sure everything is arriving on time. Plus, I love that their clothes are relatively inexpensive – a must for seasonal clothing that can’t be worn all year (even though my kids would definitely argue that Christmas pjs are year-round staples! 😂)
So here are three different palette themes I put together using my favorites from Old Navy!
Festive Fall!
Festive Fall is such a versatile way to style your family. I particularly love this look because it can be featured in photos year-round. When we’ve done super-Christmas-y outfits (which is not a bad thing either), I’ve found myself hesitant to display them outside of the holidays.
Main colors: burgundy + beige
Filler color ideas: black, tan, yellow

Buffalo Plaid!
For a more festive look, buffalo plaid is so fun! We did accents of buffalo plaid in our photos last year.
Main colors: black + red
Filler color ideas: demin, cream

Green & Gray!
This combination is so flattering on so many people! I especially love a good sparkly silver/gray for an even more festive look.
Main colors: green + gray
Filler color ideas: black, denim, cream
Tips & Tricks for Choosing Outfits
Here are some guidelines I like to follow when selecting coordinating outfits for our fam! However, I’d definitely check with your photographer before your photos to find out what he/she recommends!
- Choose coordinating, not matching outfits. In my personal opinion, it looks really funky when everyone is wearing the exact same outfit, and makes it difficult for personalities to shine!
- Pick two main colors, and fill in with other neutrals such as denim, beige, or black. There are so many lovely color combinations to choose from for the holidays, and starting there will give you some direction. Bonus: some of my favorite Christmas-y combos are at the end!
- Avoid competing patterns, logos, and graphics. We love that you love your sports team, but that’s for a different kind of picture!
- Consider the background.
- Good: Complementing the background. Bad: blending in with it. For example, in my previous drivers license photo here (#floatinghead 😂)
BONUS outfit color combos:
- Green and Navy
- Navy and Burgundy
- Cream and Red
- Green and Beige
Which color palette is your favorite? I’d love to know in comments!
Happy holiday pics, my friends!!!
Also, here’s a sneak peek of ours this year!
(We went with the Festive Fall color palette!) How’d we do?!
