8 Stylish Modern Farmhouse Design Ideas to Transform Your Home!

When we started our renovation project, I was all over Pinterest looking for modern farmhouse design ideas, and now, I finally have some of my own to share! In case you missed it, we’re in the process of completing a BIG renovation: CLICK HERE to read the full post and see what’s going down over here and why we are doing what we’re doing! Hopefully, by sharing some of these progress photos, you can get some inspiration for your own projects, and get closer to designing and building that home of your dreams!

At the beginning of the process, I sat down and came up with my personal ideal designs and plans for each space. Working from that “blueprint” (i.e. Canva inspiration board I put together), I was able to make selections with the help of an interior designer in order to put it all together and make our dreams come to life. She has been unbelievably essential at every step of the way, and I’m thrilled with how everything is looking, especially now that some spaces are nearly complete. I’m planning to write more about why we made the decision to hire a designer soon, so if that interests you, stay tuned, my friend!

As for today, however, I wanted to share our progress, and in particular, the modern farmhouse design ideas and features that really make the spaces look and feel beautiful and uniquely ours!

Shiplap, Shiplap, and MORE Shiplap.

Are you a shiplap lover as well?

It was a priority for me to tie in the current home design with the new addition, and we already had three sections of shiplap in the existing spaces. It was an easy choice to add more shiplap in one of our gal’s bedrooms, the girls bathroom, the entrance, the powder bath (IT’S BLACK there which is my newest obsession) AND one small accent wall. I know, I know, it’s a LOT. But, hey, I love it. Obviously.

Hopefully shiplap isn’t leaving the scene anytime soon.

Here’s a REEL I made about my undying love for shiplap and all the spaces we put it! And hang out with me on Instagram while you’re at it!

2

dream-beam ceiling

This tongue and groove ceiling would make an absolutely dreamy focal-point to any room! We’ve added it to our guest living space, where it is simply gorgeous, with the light from the large windows making it shine!

I learned that the difference between shiplap and tongue and groove is difficult to see from the exterior: shiplap panels overlap, while tongue and groove panels interlock. I can’t wait to see this room come together as we add furniture, lighting fixtures, and a kitchenette!

So who’s coming to stay with us?

PIN IT for later inspiration!!!

3

wainscoting galore

Wainscoting makes a beautiful addition to any space with naked walls!

It is new to our home design, but I feel like it adds so, so much to every room where we added it. And, it can be done in many different ways: floor to ceiling, shadow boxes under windows, shadow-boxes over doorways, chair-rail height, black wainscoting, white wainscoting, PURPLE wainscoting. It’s all over and so versatile! We chose to add wainscoting in several spaces: a future guest room, my favorite hallway, two of our girls’ rooms, and our new office space.

And, BONUS, wainscoting is pretty easy to do and relatively low-cost. It would be a great DIY project, as well!

accent beams

Accent beams offer a MAJOR up-level to any space with a plain ceiling! Our garage/gym accent beams are up and they are looking amazing! We also added accent beams to our dark green office space (currently has kids sleeping on the floor in there). These beams are not quite the right stain yet but are sure beautiful.

The show-stopper, however, is certainly the skybridge area (can’t even believe I’m saying that, but here we are). The beams are now in, with both horizontal boards, and then slightly contrasting accent beams which are gorgeous. I’m so happy with how it’s turned out, especially considering that this was one space where I turned into a little bit of a diva and sent back the stain samples 4(!!!) times. We really wanted to get it perfect on the lighter beams, and I think we did. What do YOU think?

herringbone tile

Looking to make a design statement out of your tile? Try a herringbone pattern!

We added tile in a herringbone pattern behind our guest bathroom mirrors and shower and it is REALLY fun. I think it will look less busy when the mirrors are added. Even now, however, I am just loving the look and texture of these tiles that bring together the whole design for this space!

6

antique-style floor tile

A statement tile on the floor will also set a space apart and really make it uniquely your own! If you’re drawn to an antique look, as well as neutrals, then you may also love a vintage-style tile like this one we chose for our guest bathroom. It brings a feminine vibe and doesn’t detract from the other elements in this space.

We also added it in the toilet room and the laundry space, where it continues to shine!

7

wooden posts

We explored the possibility of doing a half-stone, half-wooden post, but ultimately decided that a full wooden post is more true to the overall style we were looking to create. The metal accents are also really fun and incorporates the industrial vibes.

We will be adding a porch and our actual door soon! Stay tuned!

8

exterior stone

exterior stone as a modern farmhouse design idea with black and white exterior farmhouse

Exterior stonework is a lovely way to make modern and farmhouse meet. We chose this darker stone without too much veining in order to keep the look as uniform as possible. It’s the only place where we have exterior stone but I’m so happy we added it.

Which design idea is your favorite? And hey, if you have any questions or need any more specific information about what we’ve created, let me know!!!

I’d love to know what YOU really want to know about our renovation project and how I can best help you as you create your own dream home!
