Our Modern Farmhouse Renovation: All of the Details!
Well, my goodness, It’s FINALLY time to share all of the details about our dream modern farmhouse renovation!!
I’ve received so many questions about what we’re doing and can tell that you are just excited about this as we are. Until now, the biggest “renovation” project we’ve pioneered is changing a shower into a bathtub. So this addition/renovation project has been a huge, beautiful blessing in our lives. We’ve been able to make every choice along the way, ourselves, from the very beginning, which is a weird, wild, wonderful thing.
Let’s dive in and talk details, shall we?
I truly hope you will see that our intentions behind what we’re doing are to comfortably bring people into our lovingly-crated spaces and generously share the gifts we’ve been given with others.
Why did we decide to renovate?
Our house, before this project, was absolutely stunning. And because it was so wonderful, I could see it being hard to understand, maybe, why we would feel the need to make any changes. I will quickly explain our decision. Because the house was built by empty-nesters, the layout was perfect for them. (For all of the details on how we ended up on this property and in this home, check out: “The One Where We Bought a Farm“). Bringing our family into this space, however, meant that the functionality of spaces would need to change to fit our own needs.
Here were our priorities when we started planning the renovation:
- It is a priority for us to have a comfortable space for our guests to stay. Currently, our kids sleep in what they designed as guest space, which means that our guests sleep in a converted office space, without a bathroom nearby (it’s on a different floor and they share shower/bath space with our girls). Long term, we felt like this wasn’t the best option. Our aging families live out of state and we want them to want to visit and to be able to do so without issue.
- We wanted each of our girls to have their own rooms as they get older. We see this house as having potential to be our forever home. With only two bedrooms, two of our girls share a room. Already, the girls are so different, each with unique needs and interests and preferences for sleeping and music, etc. If it is possible for us to allow them their own space, we’d like to do that.
Could we still make the current layout work forever? Absolutely. Would people still come visit us even if we didn’t change a thing? Yes. Could the girls share their rooms and bathroom forever? Sure.
But, after 1. evaluating our budget, 2. making a list of our dreams for the future of our home, and then 3. working with a contractor and architect to determine if the changes were even possible, we were given a green light on all accounts. That was just over a year ago. Today, I am thrilled to *finally* share how everything is coming together, as we wrap up this project over the next 2 months.
Let’s take a look at where we’re at with everything, shall we?
*Everythiing is right smack in the middle of construction – the pictures will be better at the end for sure!
here’s What we are adding/changing during our modern farmhouse renovation:
Two girls bedrooms
Our oldest gals will each get a brand-spanking new room (their old room is in the process of becoming an office space).
Room 1 (for our 7-year old) has lilac horizontal shiplap and will have plum eucalyptus wallpaper above the shiplap when all is said and done (trust me, it’ll look gorgeous together).
Room 2 (for our 9 year old) will have white chair-rail height wainscoting (she just changed the plan last week so they haven’t put it all in yet). Above the wainscoting will be a blue/gray paint.
Both rooms have sizable closets (no idea what we’re putting in them for closet packages yet).
girls bathroom
This bathroom has shiplap behind the vanity. We may end up changing the mirror because the Pottery Barn mirror we selected is looking small in the space. We picked brass fixtures and a gorgeous white tile behind the bathtub. There is also a custom bathtub shelf. We’ll be added glass shower doors next.
two guest bedrooms
These nearly identical, sizable rooms will be where our guests can stay! I’ve planned contrasting designs, with one room being dark, masculine, sharp lines, (the Buffalo room), and the other being more feminine: think white bricks, rustic woods, and light accents (the Sweet Room).
hallway
I am THRILLED about this hallway. The wainscoting is gorgeous, and the addition of faux crystal chandeliers will really make it pop even more. The floor will be a herringbone hardwood which I cannot wait to see. Eventually this will connect into our current spaces.
gym/garage
The gym/garage area is sure to be one we access constantly. The concrete floors will be finished (similar to epoxy), and rubber matting will cover the workout areas. We will have mirrors installed as well. Our gym equipment (currently spread out between the house and the barn) will all be moved into one area. A sound system has already been installed in the ceiling. We have industrial-style lighting on the way, as well. The beams add such a special touch, don’t you think?
guest bathroom
The guest bathroom was so. fun. to design. I’d been waiting for a place to put something olive (I want everyyyyything green right now), and this vanity is so gorgeous in this share. We are working with an interior designer, and she found this incredible floor tile. I am absolutely obsessed with the vintage vibes and how it looks with the olive cabinetry! The herringbone tile is the sugar on top. We went with matte black fixtures and two gold-framed mirrors that I can’t wait to see in the space.
living area
This space will contain a seating area for our guests – think loveseat a couple of chairs, and a cool chandelier. We’ll also have a kitchenette added to help our guests be completely self-sufficient if they want to be! Off of this room, there is also a laundry area and pantry space.
powder bath
I really wanted an extra moody space, and this small powder bath was just the place to make that happen. I picked lighter cabinet finishes and light flooring to hopefully balance out the black vertical shiplap. And soon, I’ll be showing you the most gorgeous wallpaper you’ve ever seen, which is going on this ceiling. Stay tuned.
bridge
Well I saved the best for last. This EPIC space was one that Tim dreamed up as we figured out how to make existing space connect with new spaces and boy is it a show-stopper. With heated tile floor, gorgeous windows, floor lighting, and a vaulted ceiling, it’s a stunner already. Can’t wait to get the finishing touches in here.
Thank you for coming along on the tour with me! As you can see, the renovation is well underway and I am so. dang. excited to share each of these spaces with you as they come together.
Make no mistake, this is a tremendous blessing in our lives. The ability, after so many years, to be able to create the home of our dreams continues to bewilder us every day. We are looking forward to the day when we get to share it with others. And I hope you’ll follow along as I continue to update you on the progress!! Questions? Let me know below!
