Pantry Inspo 101!

Some of you are not going to get excited about the fact that this post is about my pantry. And some of you are gonna be like, “holllllaaa! She’s finally speaking my language!”

I have been wanting to share this update FOR-EV-ER. (Which, full transparency, may explain why I’m wearing this chunky sweater in a post I’m doing in June). Hooooonestly, we did this update right around the time we updated our basement (check it out here in “A Basement Makeover You Won’t Want to Miss!”) and it just seemed like a lot of home stuff at once to post, so I held off. Then, whoopsie, I kind of forgot to share.

But anyway. So about this pantry.

You guys.

It was bad.

I mean….BAAAAAAD.

I was thoroughly embarrassed about even the idea of showing you the before pics. So, look really quickly and try not to judge the fact that this is horrific and obviously we were eating really terrible foods at the time. But I’ve told you guys you can count on me for honesty, so it seemed wrong to skip the before.

Um. Yeah. BAD.

Basically, we moved about 3 times and kept moving along all of this junk in the form of expired evaporated milk (which I swear I have never even used one time), years old soy sauce, 12 bags of half-eaten chips, etc., with us. GROSS. (I know I’m not alone, here, right?!) Anyway, when we finally did our big purge, there were several large garbage bags full of items to be tossed and donated. We recognize how wasteful that was and are truly working to avoid wasting future food by keeping the pantry tidy and only buying food we plan to consume that week (or soonish!)

It was so bad that I found three (opened) containers of coconut oil that I bought just because I kept losing them in the pantry abyss.

Once we cleaned house, we saw what we were working with and I headed out to Walmart for some inexpensive organizing supplies.

Here’s what we ended up purchasing (and BTW none of this is sponsored! It’s just what worked for us!):

These can organizers were only $11.97 each!!! Holy moly. I grabbed two.

Find them at Walmart.com

Lazy Susans – I got two of THESE ( I would’ve like to get the two-tired ones but they were out of stock at the time). ($10.47 each)

CANISTERS! I bought two of THESE 4 piece canister sets ($19.92 each)

Two of THESE cereal containers ($5.98 each)

Two of THESE extra deep folding shelves ($7.88 each)

Then 5 medium ($6.46 each) and 4 large wire baskets ($10.44 each)

THIS wrap and foil organizer ($12.97)

Whoo hoo!

In addition to the purchased items, we also used the following (that we already owned): several small and large bins (some with lids, some without), sets of canisters for baking supplies (sugar, flour, powdered sugar, and brown sugar), and a chrome bread box.

Once we had everything we needed, we started putting it back, in an order that made more sense.

You ready?!

We turned THIS

Into THIS! HOORAY!

Overall, my shopping total was $210.81 (plus tax). Not too bad for a complete overhaul of a very important space in our lives. Certainly, it could be done much cheaper if you shopped second hand or have some organization containers on hand!

Just a few notes:

  1. The bagel container actually DOES keep the bagels fresh which was SHOCKING and unexpected! The lids on those containers are also surprisingly fun to operate. Ha.
  2. The wire baskets are perfect for putting at kid-height. Our littles can grab their own snacks, with permission, of course, which takes some pressure off of us.
  3. I LOVE the can organizers, but they don’t sit perfectly on wire shelving, as they, too, are wire. I’m going to be getting some kind of clear shelf to put under them at some point.
  4. I thought I would DESPISE putting food into canisters, but it’s actually a very rewarding process for me and I LOVE the aesthetic. So I’m going to soldier on with this, for sure.
  5. I used my trusty label-maker to make labels for everything (but admittedly have yet to put them on!) Soon!
  6. I also need spice organization, so I’m going to be working on that soon as well!

Thanks for joining me today! Hopefully you got some upgrade ideas of your own!
